Chapter 10

The way Charity was looking at him made him feel as if she wanted to eat him alive, an expression he’d long ago convinced himself he’d never see on a woman’s face again.

Nick swallowed hard. He still couldn’t quite believe this incredible woman hadn’t run yet, but there was still every chance. He had to keep his feet firmly on the ground—no matter what happened, he couldn’t allow himself to be swept away on a torrent of emotion.

She didn’t make it easy for him, though. Every sane, sensible thought had gone clean out of his head when her lips had connected with his disfigured skin. And not just anywhere—the spot she’d chosen was the most badly damaged, where the largest fragment of hot shrapnel had embedded itself in his flesh. She kissed a haphazard trail across his back, and then she was facing him once more.

He waited for the questions, the ones that required details in the answer, but all he saw in her gaze was desire. How could that be, when his body bore the scars of the life he’d chosen—the life that had been taken away from him while doing his duty for Queen and country, thousands of miles from home?

“I don’t know what did this to you, but I’m so sorry you had to go through it.”

He held his breath, waiting for the pity, but there was none—only tenderness and care alongside the desire. She still wanted him, and for the first time since his life had been turned inside out, he felt a sense of release from the past. Charity was different—she wasn’t like his fiancée, or the woman he’d briefly dated. She saw past the scars. What would she make of the man beneath?

“If it hadn’t happened, I wouldn’t be here.”

And that was the truth. His army career would have continued, and by now he’d have achieved the rank of major. He’d felt the loss of his career keenly for months while he recuperated and regained his strength and mobility, but in this moment, it was a price worth paying, to have this incredible woman standing in front of him, making him think he could have all the things he’d once believed beyond his reach.

“They don’t still hurt, do they?”

So many years after the event, they were as healed as they were going to get. “No, not for a long time. When I said we’d find out together, I meant it, but…” He shook his head. “There’s no real need to worry.”

“Then I won’t.” She took his hand. “Come on. Let’s get wet.”

The shower was easily large enough for two, and after getting hot, sweaty and dusty on horseback, the cascade of hot water was more than welcome. With a mischievous grin, Charity pushed him under the showerhead first, and seconds later her hands were sliding over his back, working up a lather with a familiar, faintly floral-scented body wash. Her ministrations slowed noticeably as she attended to the left half of his torso, almost as if she thought him more vulnerable there.
